What is squalane and why is it popular among skincare enthusiasts? Let’s get through some quick facts:
• Squalane (with the “a”) VS. Squalene (with the “e”)
While they are essentially the same compound, Squalane is the stabilized form of Squalene.
Squalene is a poly-unsaturated hydrocarbon that is naturally found in lots of animals and plants, also being a key compound in human sebum.
• Where is squalane derived from?
Although initially squalane was derived from shark liver, due to obvious ethical concerns thankfully times have changed, as more and more brands have made the switch to plant-based squalane, commonly derived from olive, rice bran, wheat bran or sugarcane.
• Being the stabilized form, ultimately meaning a much longer shelf life, it’s what we’re looking for right? Let’s dive a bit into the benefits of Squalane:
– being a key compound in human sebum means the skin will instantly know what it is, so irritations or allergic reactions are unlikely to occur. (But still do make sure to check the full formulation and purity of your skincare item containing squalane)
– squalane oil often feels lighter and less greasy than other face oils, being a good alternative for sensitive or acne prone skin types looking to experiment with face oils.
– effective for dry skin or those looking to prevent moisture loss, to repair the skin barrier and gain a healthy, youthful appearance.
– works well alongside other antioxidants to overcome skin damage that was caused by UV rays.
Now that we know what is squalane and its’ benefits, here is a suggestion of squalane oil worth trying: the Plainet Squalane Oil 100 by Purito *
A nice wordplay to highlight a plain and simple, one ingredient oil derived from 100% sugarcane. Pure, plant based, vegan, cruelty-free. Sustainable packaging.
Having experimented with various face oils in the past, this is definitely one of the lightweight and less greasy ones that I’ve tried (as I was hoping and expecting from a squalane oil)
Designed as a multifunctional product, you can use it for either your face, your lips when in need of extra moisture, your body by massaging it a few drops onto your skin while giving extra attention to the drier areas and even your hair if you are dealing with dry hair and split ends by spreading a few drops the ends of your hair.
Considering how handy it is for the entire body, I somewhat wish the bottle was bigger😄 I’ve mostly used it on my face as the cold winter is testing me endlessly, and a few times on my body, too. Didn’t try on my hair yet.
Have you tried squalane oil yet? What is your fave one?
